The bespoke dress is handwoven using traditional hand-loom practices, while blending natural fibers from pineapple leaf fibers and spun Mulberry silk. The fabric is hand-dyed and constructed in Georgia, USA. The dress took a lot of inspiration from the Oklahoma state flag that have some elements of native and non-native symbology:
  • We dyed the dress in blue that is inspired by the Choctaw flag, which represents devotion.
  • We cut, dyed and sewn olive branches by hand to the dress to represent the European Americans.
  • We mixed in silhouettes of Indian paintbrush petals and eagle feathers around the neckline of the dress to represent the Native American belief that the eagle is the strongest, bravest and holiest of birds, we wanted to signify this in Jessi’s gown.
  • The Indian Paintbrush that adorns the skirting of the gown is a wild flower from the Great Plains, it is also called the “Grandmother’s Hair” by the Chippewa Indians. The Indian paintbrush was used for medicine and hair oils.
  • The natural and eco-conscious materials of the gown is reflective of the organic and wholesome nature of the native tribes’ lifestyle.
